Our residential work is centred on understanding how people live and what their home needs to do better. Through a friendly, collaborative process, we explore clear design options and create thoughtful, comfortable spaces that improve light, flow and everyday life.

LISTED BUILDING EXTENSION

The existing 2 bedroom bungalow is a Grade B Listed lodge. By nature of the building, the rooms were small and unsuitable for a growing family. The owners required more flexible accommodation,  an increase in bedroom numbers and more social living space. The extension exploits the high ceilings of the existing bungalow to go both up and down, achieving 2 storeys to the rear, giving direct access to the garden and maximising light.

NEW BUILD HOUSING

Designing new homes for challenging sites is where our technical and creative problem‑solving experience comes to the forefront.

We worked with extreme steep gradients for a 3 house site with incredible views, restrictive planning policies and sensitive landscapes. It was imperitive to shape proposals that sit comfortably within their setting while meeting all regulatory demands.

Our process begins with a clear understanding of levels, access and visibility, to achieve a well‑considered, buildable design that makes the most of a difficult site and delivers a homes that feels grounded, practical and beautifully resolved - attracting a premium for the developer client

EXTEND FOR MULTIGENERATIONAL LIVING

The homeowner approached Studio Ted for ideas on how to incorporate additional living space as a 'granny annexe'. Not only was the additional space achieved but an additional roof terrace for the family was incorporated to maximise the view, setting and increase useable outdoor space.

MODERN INFILL IN CONSERVATION AREA

Studio Ted picked up this exiting new build in a gap site of a conservation area, post planning approval. Proposals are for a contemporary 4 bed house, with living accommodation at ground floor and 4 bedrooms, in a long plan form with dramatic modern form for the context. We worked with the client builder on staged building warrant information - providing construction services and site overseeing.

The timber frame is clad in palette of contemporary materials consisting of zinc cladding, slate roof & walls, Cora stone cladding to the front at ground floor with areas of western Cedar timber cladding.

CHANGING FORM TO SUIT FUNCTION

This 3 bed bungalow was locally famous for its pyramid roof.

The problem was the roof, years of leaking lead to some serious internal issues that need to be addressed. Studio Ted Architecture was appointed to prepare design options for a new roof with additional bedrooms. The clients opted for for a pitched roof design with gable ends, 2 bedrooms and a toilet. The south gable had a juliette balcony with a window to the north gable. Some internal alterations were required to the ground floor to allow a staircase to be installed to access attic rooms.Planning was eventually approved in June 2024, with the Building Warrant being granted in June 2024. Construction works started in December of 2024 to temporarily seal the existed house with the roof being constructed a short time later. Construction works are anticipated to be completed by the end of 2025.

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL

Studio Ted Architecture was appointed by the client to produce design options for a side extension to increase living space and bedroom numbers. The chosen option availed of the site topography bringing in a basement level to achieve an additional storey and direct access to the garden.

This resulted in a 2 storey extension to the front and 3 storeys to the rear with dramatic open plan living space to the ground floor with large kitchen and dining area - making maximum use of the amazing view to the rear.
